Even the stars

Even the stars

I go off to a secluded place to be alone and watch the stars

Tiny crystals in the evening sky

Quiet as a sleeping lamb

In clusters so brilliant and bright.

Yet in the forefront of my mind

Come the broken pieces of my heart

That were once so whole and alive.

Oh why, dear stars, must good things be so frail?

Flowers smile and dance in the spring

But petals fall and beauty fades.

In my tears the cool wind,

My loving teacher in whispers,

Engulfs me and speaks to me his answer.

Rose petals are carried on my wings, says the wind,

But doesn’t the rose bloom again?

In autumn leaves fall, yielding to winter’s rest,

For everything must rest, you know.

Even the stars display their glory when the sun has gone to bed

And don’t you think they deserve their turn?

Gaze into their beauty and see.

Like stars and flowers

Love is a many-splendored thing, they say

Its breath is life, like my feathered gusts

Its lips are dazzling red poinsettias

Its heart beats in time with yours

Its tongue tastes sugar, spice, and all things nice.

Be patient and see

Both flowers and stars

See a new beginning.

Even the stars wait and know,

For when the sun’s final sliver of light

Slips below the horizon,

The stars hold their breath

And grin to one another

Waiting to show a world that can see,

What they were made to be,

Saying,

It’s time, my friends.

Come, let us shine.

  3. I loved the contemplation and inspirational conclusions within your poem. It is such a beautiful pause – finding a moment to gaze at the immense wonders of creation, and to breathe in deeply all that nature teaches us about our purpose. It is a poem that catches that sense of appreciating the magnificent grandeur and yet also the attention to detail in the miniscule – and realizing that there is so much love, so much purpose, and so much meaning.

We have a wonderful hope. Some days, the challenges and demands of this current system can block out our connection with the wonders of creation. But taking some time out to immerse ourselves in all of the sublime creations we see as we look up, as we look down, and as we look all around, can help us reconnect, and to go on with conviction that our existence is no accident.
